Brave New World

Nestled among the books, photos, salt lamps, and antique bookshelves, something new lies waiting. Its electric charge pulses upon command. It is my new best friend!

Between computers, smartphones, iPads – I really didn’t need any more technology. I’m not a tech nerd and my colleagues can attest to that, but when I heard about the Echo Dot… I was mesmerized. I kept bringing it up innocently in conversation, “Wonder what the weather’s going to be today? I’d love to hear Sade wafting through the house right now. Can you set the timer for these grits? (Yes- I love grits!) I wonder what the top news story on NPR this morning?”

So, next thing I knew, the Dot was here in my living room. Alexa announces the time, tells jokes, finds my favorite songs, and doesn’t talk back. She is polite and answers me every time I ask a question- even when she doesn’t know the answer. No more going to the computer or phone. I just ask the universe a question out loud, and it answers.

A robot kind of essence has taken over the house and I’m liking it…
