LADING

Cheers!

It’s the new year and a time for toasting in the new and ushering out the old. Celebrating milestones is my specialty. The more obscure or offbeat, the better in my book. My husband and I quietly (with a kiss) celebrate every lucky Friday the 13th since the one when we met in 1985. It will be our 56th later this month for those inquiring minds out there.

I have been known to throw a party because my peonies were in bloom, the moon was full, or because I found a tablecloth on the clearance rack. My mom modeled this for us. We had theme dinners in the early seventies before they were a thing. It wasn’t just spaghetti for dinner but Italian night. No fancy trimmings or centerpieces, just an elaboration of the moment and a story of lore. The atlas might be brought to the table with a discussion of Germany’s location and what sauerbraten is (besides not very tasty and certainly not zehr gut!) Mom was all about unearthing things in daily life to celebrate.

Because Mom would approve, we have her portrait in our “Empty Nest Lounge” where she might be holding a martini glass prop or wearing a Santa hat (or this year a tree skirt.)

Interestingly, we aren’t big on the traditionally celebrated things like birthdays or graduations. Jim and I may or may not give each other a birthday, anniversary or Christmas gift. Neither of our boys attended their college graduations ( although we did have an old cap and gown they donned to the cheers of family members in our front hall.)

Anyway, you can imagine our pride when Harrison and his girlfriend invited us to mark his car’s 100,000 mile moment. We hooted, honked and hollered while driving around our nearby park watching the odometer rollover and listening to a tune called “Drive Slow” ( it should be slowly but I digress. ) Crystal champagne flutes were clanked filled with the bubbly (non alcoholic style!) A 100Grand candy bar was part of it all too. It was so much fun I’m planning a similar event next week when my “White Cloud” (1997 Mercury Wagon) turns twenty.
