Friendship in Silver

At  first glance the silver bowl across the room attracts me and I want to touch it.  As I approach the bowl I see that it contains a collection of beautiful fall leaves, not at first visible to me.  Startled, I avoid the bowl for a while and slowly thoughts flutter down around me.  These are Helen’s leaves; a gift of friendship and love to Amy.  I have this same gift at home. Sisters to these leaves rest in a box sitting on my table, open but unexplored, appreciated but not fully experienced. Now I get a second chance to honor my gift.  This bowl placed into my hands by Helen, filled with leaves chosen for Amy. Cool and smooth, that silver smell communicates time, age and….Value. The leaves, some decorated by an artistic hand, others by the season – the message they share with me is to slow down, appreciate the moments.  Will I breeze by the gifts of my day, favor them with a pause and glance only to leave them, waiting, in the box in which they arrived? Or, will I experience and treasure these gifts, bring them out into the light and give them their moment in silver?

This post is in honor of the wonderful, extended weekend we three 55andChangers recently spent together! Amy and your beautiful family – thank you for hosting (and feeding!) us so lovingly. Helen I’m so grateful that you got us moving to set up this visit and that you could travel all this way. Our friendship spans almost four decades and only gets deeper, more special and more fun as we go!
    Love you both!
