Puppy-Love Lessons

Learned behavior usually has me moving fast, task to task, thinking three moves ahead of the spot I’m in. This works for me though admittedly it is a bit exhausting and really, is this absolutely necessary?

Over the last 4 months there’s been a change in our home that has caused a major slow-down. A furry, 7-pound little change by the name of Penny. Yep my husband, Paul, and I decided that we didn’t have quite enough going on and perhaps we needed a puppy! After not too much forethought Paul found this sweet, wild little bundle and she moved right in, bringing her particular happy brand of fun and distraction with her.

With Penny came the realization that there is time, and need, for purely fun and non-productive activity. We now spend a lot of time letting this girl in and out of the backdoor on a Saturday morning, attempting to teach her to fetch and dance for treats, searching the house and often finding her in strange places making strange messes. She makes us laugh and gives us a nice, uncomplicated, funny new common interest.

None of this is earth-shattering and I imagine that everyone who ever had a new puppy, or a new baby of any sort, has experienced such feelings.  Without a distraction of some sort, it’s easy to get way too serious and miss the chance to have some fun.  Paul and I now have our own, built-in little excuse to take a break and share a laugh.

We are both happily, deep in puppy-love!

That sounds great! With two aging cats in our house, Greg and I are the ones trying to get them to play. Nice to be reminded of the fun baby animals bring.

Eli is coming up on 9 months and the star of our lives and puppy class! He began his Canine Good Citizen class yesterday. He passed the preliminary test, how ever Charlie and I have some more work to do. We met new friends and Eli is thrilled with his new girl friends.

After York passed we just couldn’t stand not having a dog around. Eli is a GOD send. I just want to “Hold him and squeeze him and I’ll call him George”.
